The site of Dirranbandi was surveyed and named in 1885, the name has several slightly different meanings, the most popular being "Frogs croaking in a swap at night".

The Great South-West of Queensland, Australia, is home to Dirranbandi, which you can travel to via Brisbane on the Warrego Highway and the Great Inland Way. Public road transport is provided by McCaffety's (ex Brisbane to Toowoomba) and Kynoch Coaches (ex Toowoomba to Dirranbandi). Air transport is also provided by QANTAS regional services (MacAir) to St. George (96km North of Dirranbandi).

The main primary industries for Dirranbandi are cotton, wool, beef and wheat.
